Leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) were detained in Delhi ahead of a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on October 10, 2026.
CJP Leaders Detained Upon Arrival
Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka were detained when they arrived in Delhi to attend the protest. Meanwhile, CJP legal affairs head Ratna Singh was held outside her Jangpura residence as police cracked down on protesters ahead of the demonstration.
Police Crackdown and Detentions
Delhi Police detained over 500 protesters across the city before the protest scheduled for October 10. Ms. Singh recounted that police arrived at her residence around 8:45 a.m. and attempted to enter, but a flatmate who is also a lawyer stopped them, citing the need for a warrant.
Ms. Singh was later surrounded by police and CRPF personnel while sitting in a car with two other lawyers outside her home. She said the police claimed there were “verbal orders from above” mandating her detention.
Legal Challenge Planned
The CJP plans to challenge Ms. Singh’s detention legally through an application to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, filed by advocate Adit Pujari. Ms. Singh denied any unlawful assembly as the group consisted of only three people.
Purpose of the Protest
Ms. Singh was en route to join lawyers protesting outside the Supreme Court before a larger protest at Jantar Mantar. The protest, called by CJP and several Left organisations, demands the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the rollback of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
Statement from CJP
The CJP condemned the police action, stating, “This pre-planned interception by the Delhi Police aims to cripple the leadership of today’s peaceful demonstrations before they even reach the protest site. The CJP denounces this blatant violation of freedom of movement and demands the immediate, unconditional release of Dipke, Das, and Ranka.”
